The Halewood air quality monitoring system is located along Higher Road and continuously monitors levels of oxides of nitrogen (NO, NO2) and small particles (PM10 & PM2.5). PM10 & PM2.5 are fractions of particles with a diameter smaller than 10 & 2.5 µm (1 µm = 1 millionth of a meter). In comparison, the average diameter of a human hair equals 50-70 µm. Oxides of nitrogen are primarily produced by road traffic.

These days, the pollutant of most particular concern is is carbon monoxide that comes from motor vehicle traffic.
Secondary Pollutants These are just as harmful as primary pollutions and are not emitted directly; they form in the atmosphere when primary pollutants join together in a chemical reaction:
